Press photo essay in the aftermath of the January 7, 2015 attack at Charlie Hebdo and the popular response on January 11.

Special mention from the jury, Ligue des droits de l'Homme competition.

The Charlie Hebdo attacks took place in 2015 in Paris, France. On January 7, two brothers, Saïd and Chérif Kouachi, burst into the offices of Charlie Hebdo, a satirical newspaper known for its drawings of Mohammed, and opened fire, killing 12 people, including several famous cartoonists and journalists.

The following day, another terrorist, Amedy Coulibaly, took people hostage in a Jewish supermarket, killing four people before being shot dead by the forces of law and order. All three terrorists have been linked to jihadist groups such as Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State.

The attacks aroused strong emotions in France and around the world, and led to demonstrations of solidarity in support of freedom of expression. Tens of thousands of people marched through the streets of Paris waving placards bearing the slogan "Je suis Charlie", while many countries expressed their support for France.

Below are a few photos I took the day after the Charlie Hebdo attack, highlighting the popular response on January 11.

The photo at the top of this page was awarded a Special Mention by the jury of the Ligue des droits de l'Homme competition.
